Is Graphic Design Still A Man’s World?

Undeniably, there is a dominance of the male population in the world of graphic design. Not that it is being sexist, but there are certain factors that lead to this.

Graphic design is all about putting together images or graphics in order to create a design. These designs can be used in advertising or marketing whether it may be online or print. They make information appear memorable and impactful. Graphic design often leads to very long hours at the office which also often leads to unhealthy eating through snacking on junk food. There has always been a perception that lead everyone to believe that when it comes to dealing with the intricacies of the software, men are better. Times are slowly changing and there are roles that even women are getting into.

Graphic designers are keen with color, balance and enough technical skills in order for them to execute their design. Is it really meant to be a man’s world? Truth is women have been color coordinating their outfits since they were little. Women are taught to apply make-up depending on their skin tone. So if you think about it, women are very much capable of doing the responsibility that is expected from a graphic designer.

In order for the designs to be effective, it has to have an impact with the audience and it has to be something that they can remember. You need to have that emotional connection which men do not necessarily have since they often keep emotions to themselves. This is perhaps one aspect that women may be good at.

Maybe gender does not play a role at all. As long as the person has the creativity, the eye and knowledge of different software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, something that can be learned by either of the sexes, it could be a start. Then continue on learning, practice and get your much needed experience until you become good at what you do. And eventually put yourself out there so the people will know who you are and what you can offer.
